My Experiences

So far, I've had 3 distinct professional experiences with Corporations. The first one starts with an Internship.

Expand the sections below for an elaboration.

  • Taking initiative, with Kraft Foods

I was initially hired on a 2-month internship. Based on my performance and zeal, my term was extended by another month allowing me to maximise my summer off from University. After an interesting conversation with my manager, I was given the opportunity to apply my fresh perspective and make things better. What ensued was me,

    • Independently generating a Profit and Loss statement for a Key Account

This was the first by-product of the conversation with my manager, he approached me saying 'Here, since you want some challenging work, I've been struggling to make sense of the data here to create an accurate P&L for this account, you think you can get it done?' It was on! I spent over 4-5 hours after work that evening and made sure I walked out having finished it.

    • Simplifying the model to manage and report on media bookings

At the time, our Media Agency would periodically send multiple files to different stakeholders based on their functional needs. The team(s) were struggling to manage multiple versions of different files and understandably so. I worked with the Media Agency to understand their process was able to create a prototype that would only need the Agency to enter booking details once (instead of manually entering it in multiple files) by creating a model on Excel to present the entries in how many ever ways needed.

  • Procurement Transformations, with Weston Foods

When I graduated, I was given another 2-month chance, this time, to prove my worth as a Procurement Analyst. Since I didn't have prior experience in the field, my first task would be to shadow the current process with the intent to identify bottlenecks and free up capacity for Business Unit leads that also doubled as Category Leads in our Matrix structure. Once I understood and analysed the process flow, I convinced another colleague to help me build a macro using VBA for Excel. The model absorbed all the manual 'copy-pasting' work and reduced time spent by 95%, thus allowing the Business Unit leads to spend more time interpreting business results and making recommendations. My 2-month contract grew to a year's worth of experience and I was able to work on some other cool things like:

    • Managing a Category of Ingredients

As I grew more confident in my role, I was handed the responsibility of taking over management of an ingredient category - salt. I consolidated Specification sheets and sent out a Request for Proposal. I also analysed the responses and made my recommendations on awarding businesses.

    • Building a Pipeline of Productivity

I helped consolidate different sources of data containing ideas to increase productivity and moved it to a cloud-based solution. By using Google's G Suite, I was able to build a dynamic solution to capture, store and present the data. This mitigated the need for version control and made sure that there was 'one source of accurate truth' that was accessible to the business in real time. As a result, the team blew expectations out of park by delivering over 3X historical productivity benchmarks.

    • Making the Dream work, through Team Work

Based on my demonstrated ability to own a creative technological solution I was approached by the VP of IT to collaborate on an in-house solution that would immediately free-up up to $1 Million in working capital for the organization. What was initially a part-time commitment, grew into a role where I would own this platform and move to IT to focus all my efforts on creating more business solutions.

  • Being Creative, with Weston Foods

Moving to IT full-time, cemented Dev Kaush's role in my narrative.
I learnt about managing a project, developed new technical skills and sharpened my existing ones. By consistently being on the lookout for enhancement opportunites and by building a relation with my colleagues, I was able to make things better by:

    • Owning the development of a Commercialization Platform

    • Rolling out the Commercialization Platform

    • Digitizing Event Feedback collected by Brand Ambassadors

    • Building and Maintaining several Operational Productivity trackers

    • Rapidly developing a Mission-Critical Approval Workflow

    • Building a Portal for Collaboration across Business Units

    • Creating a Website for the Engagement Committee
